The Jennie & Annie is the September 2024 installment of the Sleeping Bear Yarn Club. Dyed exclusively for us by the lovely Hannah Ginn of Circus Tonic Handmade in Australia. The Jennie colorway is a blend of light grays with accents of blue, gold – some almost orange. This mighty blue is Annie; Jennie’s sister and matching Jennie’s accents. John Klenderhouse – a member of Port Oneida’s founding families – requested this new vessel be named for his younger sisters. The Jennie & Annie was a wood freighting schooner in the Great Lakes carrying corn from Chicago and heading to Buffalo when a storm rolled in as she came into the Manitou Passage. On November 12, 1872, the Jennie & Annie drove ashore north of the village of Empire, where wind and waves tore the ship apart. Seven of her crew were lost.

In 1980, the bilges of a sailing vessel appeared on the shore between North and South Bar Lakes. In 2012, a wooden keelson (one of the structural components of a ship) washed up in the same area. These big waters are peaceful, healing and bring us endless joy. But sometimes we forget to have reverence and a healthy dose of fear of her. I think we all have a story. We can become so confident in our skills, yet even  a quick surprise can overtake us. In this season of entering the lakes, let’s remember, she is in control of our outing.
