Olsen Farm Rosehip was our November 2022 feature for the Sleeping Bear Yarn Club. Dyed exclusively for us by the lovely Robyn of TeenyButton Studio in New Orleans, this variegated skein delights us in ways we were not expecting: a scatter of blaze-warm red across a backdrop of green-leaning gold, dusty fawn and tarnished silver. In this skein we can hear the crisp rattle of brittle leaves on a hike, a curl of woodsmoke on the air, the steaming cup of peppermint tea waiting to warm us back at home.
The Olsen Farm is a part of the Port Oneida Rural Historic District of the Sleeping Bear National Park. Charles and Hattie (Brammer) Olsen purchased this 160 acre parcel of land in 1915 from Frederick Dechow (Dago), an early Port Oneida settler from Hanover, Germany, who originally claimed the land in 1857. The Olsen’s farm was built around 1918 where they raised their nine children. Charles and Hattie’s son Everett bought the farm in 1963 and sold it to the National Park Service in 1973.
