Gulf Coast Native were once a feral sheep, ubiquitous in the Southwest. They are descendants of the earliest sheep brought to the US by the Spanish and French. Later, these sheep were crossed with traditional British breeds. Gulf Coast Native sheep are hardy, acclimated to heat and humidity. They can forage in woods as well as pasture, and they’re unfussy mothers, giving birth without assistance. Because of their large genetic pool, the sheep are more varied in fleece color and appearance than many specific breeds. When selected and bred for fiber, they provide us with a creamy lustrous fleece.
