Winter ’22 Issue

As for the issue itself, we’ve got a pleasant mix of makers to help fill out those holiday gift lists. Edward and Virginia Foley of Northport Workshop and Studio talked about their intentions behind their new studio space in Northport. Be on the lookout for beautiful yet practical pieces created by the process of woodturning right there in their local shop. Artist Rebecca Howe writes about the origin and process of creating art that allows for uncertainty, as a reflection of how it feels to be alive. Check out their amazing collections this holiday season. Katie Asher explains her love for the old and the weird, and the impetus behind developing her store and concept called Slip.Vintage, a second-hand clothing store in Traverse City.

If local artisan and maker shopping doesn’t put you into the holiday mood, we also have a unique article about Traverse City-based performer Ben Whiting, and how his constant study of A Christmas Carol has made bringing to life that timeless text a lifelong pursuit. The article is expertly written and composed by Joe Beyer, and provides a different perspective on that enduring holiday tale from Charles Dickens.

Speaking about things to do in the winter months, we have two stories that hit directly to that point. First, photographer George Terrizzi brings us a spectacular photo essay from a cold and blustery day of snowkiting on Long Lake. (see pic at the top!) If you’re looking for inspiration to play in the cold, this is it. We also feature our nonprofit partner, LIFT. Rebekah TenBrink speaks to the importance of investing in our youth, and the origins of her organization, born from a Rockwellian scene one winter day on an ice rink in Suttons Bay.

9.5″ x 6.5″. Handsomely bound, color throughout.
